Moderation? Balance? Biblical?

Everything in moderation.  Where does that come from, exactly? I thought I knew, and so I looked at about 7 or 8 translations before I found it:

Philippians 4:4 King James Version….let your moderation be known unto all men.

Other translations mention gentleness, forebearance, unselfishness, kindness…so it is possible that we use that catchphrase incorrectly…

Regardless, I do think it has merit.  We are to be balanced.  Not given to excess…except perhaps, I suppose, in giving to others, for we cannot outgive God…

If we are excessive in watching TV, sleeping, eating, not eating, drinking, not drinking anything at all, working, not working…well, there are always consequences…and certainly, we might hinder the witness God would like to be sharing through  us if we are fried from work, or too tired, or sick, etc…

So, let’s be moderate.  If we are gentle with ourselves, we are moderate in what we take in.  If we are unselfish, we are moderate in how much time we give to work or to our families…so I guess they DO go hand-in-hand…

That’s the tiny lesson for today…be gentle with yourself, but not given to laziness.  Hard-working, but not out-of-balance.  Enjoy the provision of God, but don’t hoard it…

And then, in that spirit of gentleness, remember, nobody’s perfect Except Him whom we find ourselves rooted in…

Psalm 18:30

New International Version (NIV)

 30 As for God, his way is perfect:
   The LORD’s word is flawless;
   he shields all who take refuge in him.

Check back here in a few days for my segue into 2 things with which I am moderate….
